Rules and regulations

Graduate courses include master’s and doctoral programs open to candidates who have obtained an undergraduate degree from a higher education institution and otherwise meet the requirements set by the educational institutions and the student selection process. These courses are governed by the program’s Internal Regulations, which are available in full on our website, as well as by the General Graduate Studies Regulations of the Federal University of Ceará.

Art. 2 The program establishes the following requirements for students to remain in the Master’s program:

I – A maximum academic commitment of 30 (thirty) months, with the possibility of an extension of up to 3 (three) months, if approved by the faculty board, which is responsible for informing PRPPG about the decision.

II – Completion of studies in courses and academic activities is expressed in credit units, with a minimum of 38 (thirty-eight) credits, including at least 14 (fourteen) in the area of concentration, 8 (eight) in the area of related domains, 4 (four) in programmed activities, 4 (four) in teaching internship, 1 (one) in qualification, 1 (one) in foreign language proficiency, and 6 (six) corresponding to dissertation activities.

III – Proficiency in reading at least 1 (one) foreign language, demonstrated by passing a proficiency exam defined by the Coordinating Office.

IV – Passing an aptitude test within 16 (sixteen) months from the start of the course.

Art. 3 The program establishes the following requirements for students to remain in the Doctoral Program:

I – A maximum academic commitment of 60 (sixty) months, with an extension of up to 6 (six) months, if approved by the faculty board, which is responsible for informing PRPPG of the decision.

II – Completion of studies in courses and academic activities is expressed in credit units, with a minimum of 70 (seventy) credits, including at least 12 (twelve) in the area of concentration, 8 (eight) in the area of related domains, 4 (four) in programmed activities, 8 (eight) in teaching internship, 1 (one) in qualification, 1 (one) in foreign language proficiency, and 12 (twelve) corresponding to thesis activities.

III – Proficiency in reading at least 2 (two) foreign languages, demonstrated by passing a proficiency test defined by the Course Coordination.

IV – Passing an aptitude test within 26 (twenty-six) months from the beginning of the course.

Art. 6 The Master’s and Doctoral programs are structured around a concentration in “Social History” and are administered by the History Department of the College of Humanities at the Federal University of Ceará.

CREDIT AND GRADING SYSTEM

Art. 16: The basic unit for assessing the intensity and duration of graduate programs is the credit, which corresponds to 16 (sixteen) contact hours.

Art. 17: Academic performance will be evaluated for each curricular component (course/activity), taking into account both attendance and efficiency.

ADMISSION

Art. 24: Admission to graduate programs for Brazilian and international candidates alike is carried out exclusively through a selection process organized by the Program’s Coordinating Office. This process is governed by a selection notice approved by PRPPG and widely publicized to ensure the entry of those applicants with the greatest potential.

Art. 25: The selection of applicants will be conducted by a selection committee appointed by the Coordinating Office, based on the criteria outlined in the selection notice.

THESIS DEFENSE

Art. 35. The qualifying examination must be taken within 15 months for the Master’s degree and within 24 months for the Doctoral degree, from the start of the program, in accordance with item IV of Art. 2 and item IV of Art. 3, respectively.
